‘Why do you care about Trump?’ my US acquaintance asked me. ‘You’re not an American. He is not your president.’

I guess she was implying ‘he is not your problem’.

Wrong.

Trump is my problem. Even now, Trump-like figures appear on the Canadian political arena. If left to their own devices, they’ll fight their way to the top. It’s not difficult. Trump has shown them how it’s done. I don’t want to end up in the situation when I look at the list of candidates in 2019 and the only people I see are Trump-like figures.

Is there anything I can do about it? In fact, yes.

The biggest danger comes from the Conservative party. It produced Stephen Harper in the past, and now it has Kellie Leitch who is an avid Trump-supporter. I don’t want this woman or anyone like her to become our next Prime Minister.

The Conservative party has the leadership election in May this year. This is our chance to contribute to the possibility of having a decent person as a PM in 2019. In the current list of candidates, there is at least one I find promising (Michael Chong).

In order to vote for the new leader, one needs to be a member of the Conservative party. The membership for a year costs $15. One must buy a membership before March 28th to be in time for the May 27th election. After purchasing it, the new member gets a membership card mailed to them. The new member will get a ballot mailed to them closer to the election date.

I see it as a reasonable way to affect the situation and exercise my power as a voter.
So, I joined in.

There is a FB post by James Bow explaining this solution in more details. You can read it in full here. In my post, I’ll repeat just the ending, which summarizes my thoughts on the matter quite neatly.

‘If you are at all considering joining the Conservative Party to vote against Leitch and for someone more decent, please do so. It doesn't take much: pay $15, don't be a member of other political party, and DO set up a separate email account when signing in as you are about to receive a lot of campaign materials from various candidates. But do it soon. The deadline of March 28th is fast approaching.

For those who haven't considered joining, but for whom the idea doesn't repel, I'd ask you to consider joining and voting against the candidates with Trump-like sentiments. The voting pool within the Conservative leadership race is much smaller than in a general election, so you have the opportunity to cut out the cancer before it metastasizes on the Canadian body of politics.’

I couldn’t agree more.

Michael Chong - мой кандидат. Поскольку практически сосед :))
